Russia Strikes Ukraine During White House Peace Summit
The Russian Federation launched drone and missile strikes across Ukraine while President Donald Trump hosted a ceasefire summit with Ukrainian and European leaders.
The Russian Federation launched a series of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine last Thursday, damaging an American electronics factory in the west and injuring dozens of civilians. The attacks occurred while U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several European leaders were meeting at the White House to negotiate a ceasefire agreement.
These strikes follow a reported increase in Russian aerial bombardments since June. The ongoing conflict has created a severe humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations reporting that one-fourth of the Ukrainian population is now displaced. Globally, the war has triggered food security concerns in Asia and Africa due to falling grain exports and has driven inflation and energy prices higher across Europe.
International bodies continue to monitor the devastation. Danielle Bell, head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, has documented patterns of violence inconsistent with international law, noting that the war is becoming increasingly deadly for civilians. The World Economic Forum estimates that the eventual cost to rebuild Ukraine will exceed $1 trillion.
