Labour Leadership Crisis Ignites Battle Over Rejoining European Union

Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham challenge Keir Starmer for Labour leadership amid internal divides over reversing Brexit following poor local election results.

The Labour Party is facing a severe leadership crisis as Keir Starmer faces calls for resignation from over 90 MPs following disastrous local election results across England, Scotland, and Wales. The turmoil intensified after former Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned from the cabinet on May 14, citing a loss of confidence in Starmer's vision. Streeting formally announced his leadership candidacy on May 16 at a Progress think tank conference, centering his platform on the argument that Brexit was a "catastrophic mistake" and advocating for the UK to rejoin the European Union one day.

Simultaneously, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham is seeking a return to Parliament via a by-election in the leave-voting constituency of Makerfield on June 18. While Burnham has expressed long-term support for rejoining the EU, he has distanced himself from that stance during his campaign to avoid alienating voters. This tactical shift led allies of Burnham to accuse Streeting of deliberate political sabotage by reigniting the Brexit debate. Other party figures, including Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, described Streeting's proposal as "out of touch."

Prime Minister Starmer has rejected demands to set a departure timetable, vowing to lead the party into the next general election. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has urged an end to "internecine warfare" to prevent further electoral losses. Meanwhile, Nigel Farage and Reform UK are leveraging the internal Labour split to campaign on border control and sovereignty, positioning themselves as a primary threat in the Makerfield contest. Former EU officials have warned that any eventual re-entry would require the UK to accept standard membership terms, potentially including the adoption of the euro.
