Trump Rejects Iranian Peace Proposals Amid Hormuz Blockade

Donald Trump rejected multiple Iranian peace proposals and maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports as both nations clashed over nuclear weapons and control of the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States and Iran remain in a diplomatic and military stalemate following a conflict that began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28, 2026. Donald Trump has repeatedly rejected Iranian peace proposals, labeling them "garbage" and "totally unacceptable," while insisting that Iran must permanently forgo nuclear weapons and dismantle its enrichment capabilities as a prerequisite for any deal.

Throughout April and May, Iran submitted several phased proposals via Pakistani mediators, seeking an end to the war, the lifting of U.S. sanctions, the release of frozen assets, and formal recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the U.S. implemented a naval blockade of Iranian ports, redirecting over 60 commercial vessels and disabling several tankers. Iran retaliated by restricting traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and implementing a toll system, which triggered a global energy crisis and spiked oil prices above $100 per barrel.

Despite a fragile ceasefire established on April 8, tensions escalated with drone attacks in the Gulf and reports of Iranian military aircraft being sheltered at Pakistan's Nur Khan Air Base. Trump has threatened to resume full-scale bombing and launched "Project Freedom," a maritime mission to escort neutral ships through the strait. While the U.S. maintains that Iran is militarily defeated, Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed to protect its nuclear assets and maintain control of the waterway.
