European Commission Allocates €2.86 Billion for Ukraine Defense
The European Commission provided €2.86 billion for Ukrainian missiles and drones as officials seek to fill a $32.6 billion funding gap for 2027.
The European Commission allocated €2.86 billion to support Ukraine's urgent operational defense needs, specifically for the procurement of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. This funding is part of a broader €90 billion loan package, which earmarks €60 billion for defense and €30 billion for budget support for the 2026–2027 period.
European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis reported that total European Union support for Ukraine has reached €228 billion since the Russian invasion began in February 2022. He stated that the EU is doing its part and that more support is to come.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian officials addressed a funding shortfall during a ministerial roundtable in Bangkok. Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko identified a $32.6 billion gap in the $52.6 billion required for the 2027 state budget. Marchenko noted that Ukraine expects the EU to cover approximately $17.5 billion, or two-thirds of its external financing needs, next year. These financial efforts run alongside an $8.1 billion program managed by the International Monetary Fund, with combined reviews scheduled for November and December.
