Volodymyr Zelensky Expresses Readiness for Wartime Presidential Election
Volodymyr Zelensky announced he is willing to run in presidential elections during the conflict with Russia if a 60-day ceasefire is reached.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his readiness to run in presidential elections even if they occur before the conflict with Russia concludes. While Ukrainian law currently mandates that elections be held at least six months after hostilities end, Zelensky stated he would explore options for a wartime vote if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire.
This proposed ceasefire window would allow Ukraine to update election legislation and establish the necessary security infrastructure. Elections have been prohibited since 2022 due to the imposition of martial law, with the last presidential vote occurring in 2019. Zelensky stated that if a vote takes place during the war, it is his duty to run because he must defend his country from the beginning until the end of the war.
The announcement follows a recent call from U.S. President Donald Trump for Ukraine to hold a presidential election.
