US and Oman Hold Talks Amid Iran Strait Fees

U.S. Ambassador Ana Escrogima met with Omani Undersecretary Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy in Muscat on August 23 to discuss bilateral collaboration and regional stability. This meeting followed a similar discussion on August 21 in Washington between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Omani Ambassador Talal Al Rahbi.

These diplomatic efforts occur as Oman negotiates with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for safe commercial navigation. The talks take place against a backdrop of high tension following an August 17 warning from Donald Trump, who stated, "If Oman gets in the way, we'll bomb the sh** out of them," regarding Oman's role in the waterway.

Simultaneously, the National Security Commission of Iran approved a plan requiring vessels from authorized countries to pay service fees to Tehran. According to spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei, these charges cover navigation, safety, environmental, and insurance services provided by Iran for ships transiting the strait.
