Lloyd Austin Warns Iran Conflict Has No Easy Way Out
Former US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that the war with Iran requires expert diplomacy as both nations believe they can outlast each other.
Former US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated at the Warsaw Security Forum on October 12 that there is "no easy way out" of the conflict between the United States and Iran. Austin noted that both nations currently believe they can outlast the other and that resolving the war will require expert diplomacy.
While President Donald Trump has claimed progress in the conflict, Austin observed that positions have hardened and the Gulf Region will "never return" to its prewar state. The conflict has resulted in the destruction of US bases and infrastructure, while Iran has demonstrated the ability to threaten the Strait of Hormuz.
Austin also highlighted sophisticated technological cooperation between US adversaries, specifically noting that China has provided data for airstrikes. The forum further addressed the entanglement of the Gulf and Ukraine wars, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserting that Kyiv will continue long-range strikes against Russia until an energy ceasefire is reached.
