Indian National Congress Condemns Narendra Modi Over Fuel Price Hikes

The Indian National Congress criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for multiple fuel price increases in May, alleging the policies burden farmers and small businesses.

The Indian National Congress launched a broad critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership on June 6, 2026, alleging that current government policies are destroying various sections of Indian society. Party leaders specifically highlighted the erosion of equality, fraternity, and justice, claiming that the rights of women, farmers, students, and Dalits have been marginalized.

Central to the opposition's complaint are four fuel price hikes that occurred throughout May, specifically on May 15, 19, and 23. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge condemned these increases, with Gandhi labeling the Prime Minister 'Inflation Man Modi.' The party argues that fuel prices were artificially suppressed during the election period only to be raised in installments afterward, a move they claim fleeces citizens and burdens micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The government has defended the price adjustments, attributing the increases to currency exchange rates and volatility in the global crude oil market. In response, Congress leaders characterize the situation as a systemic loot of the country's various social strata.
