Lee Jae Myung Proposes Sanctions Relief for Nuclear Freeze

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung proposed that the international community lift or ease economic sanctions on North Korea in exchange for a freeze on its nuclear weapons program. Pitching the strategy to U.S. President Donald Trump, Lee argued that decades of maximum pressure failed to stop Pyongyang from becoming a de facto nuclear-weapon state and instead hardened its resolve.

Lee contends that while total denuclearization remains a long-term goal, the immediate priority must be incentivizing a freeze to prevent further arsenal expansion. This proposal challenges the long-standing U.S. policy of demanding immediate denuclearization before granting sanctions relief.

The effectiveness of existing sanctions has been eroded by increased economic and military cooperation between North Korea, Russia, and China. These partnerships have left the United States with fewer leverage options as Pyongyang continues to develop plutonium production and nuclear-capable missiles.
