Prime Minister Andy Burnham Pledges Stronger Ties With India

Prime Minister Andy Burnham hosted a Diwali reception at 10 Downing Street and announced plans to visit India to strengthen diplomatic and trade links.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham hosted his first Diwali reception at 10 Downing Street on October 27, 2026, where he pledged to build the strongest possible links with India. During the event, which featured the lighting of diyas and a performance of the Hanuman Chalisa, Burnham emphasized his Labour government's goal to restore hope and unity within the United Kingdom while recognizing the contributions of British Indian, Sikh, Jain, and Muslim communities.

Economic cooperation between the two nations has accelerated following a landmark free trade agreement that entered into force 100 days ago. The agreement has already generated 12 billion pounds in deals, contributing to a broader goal of doubling bilateral trade to approximately 120 billion US dollars by 2030. Foreign Office Minister Uma Kumaran noted the agreement's role in facilitating increased investment, while Acting British High Commissioner Ben Mellor confirmed that Burnham intends to visit India, a desire he first expressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after taking office on July 20.

Other government officials joined the diplomatic outreach. Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan spoke on overcoming political division within the British Asian community. Meanwhile, Chancellor John Healey recently introduced budget measures to stabilize the British economy and provide energy bill relief to households to address cost-of-living pressures.
