Attorney General Todd Blanche May Appeal Voter Roll Cases

Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the Justice Department may ask the Supreme Court to intervene in federal efforts to access state voter rolls.

Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that the Justice Department may seek Supreme Court intervention in dozens of cases concerning the federal government's attempts to access state voter rolls before the November midterm elections. The legal conflict follows an executive order by President Donald Trump requiring states to provide voter data, including driver's licenses and Social Security numbers, to investigate noncitizen registration and other deficiencies.

While some states complied, the Justice Department sued 30 states and Washington, D.C. Federal judges have since ruled against the government in at least 22 of those cases. Opponents of the federal effort, including Vermont Governor Phil Scott, argue that state leaders are better positioned to manage elections than the federal government.

Blanche also addressed accusations regarding his independence from the president. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the Justice Department as a subsidiary of the Trump administration, while Blanche asserted he will act with integrity and prosecute without favor.
