Ukraine Strikes Iranian Vessel and Russian Warship in Caspian Sea

Ukrainian forces conducted long-range drone strikes in the Caspian Sea on July 25 and 26, 2026, targeting a Russian warship and vessels transporting Iran-linked military cargo. Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the operations as achieving very strong results, arguing that Iran is already a participant in the war by supplying Russia with drones and technology. The strikes caused an explosion on the Ana, an Iranian commercial dry cargo ship that had departed from Astrakhan, Russia, killing one sailor and injuring others.

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack as a hostile and criminal act of aggression and a violation of the UN Charter. Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi alleged the strike was conducted at Israel's behest to draw Europe into the conflict and warned that the action cannot go unanswered. Tehran summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires to lodge a formal protest and requested decisive action from the UN Security Council and the European Union.

Zelenskyy further alleged that Russia is assisting Iran by sharing satellite surveillance of U.S. military facilities in the Gulf states. In response to the Caspian operations, Russia launched missile strikes against Kyiv. Meanwhile, the United States paused a streak of escalating strikes against Iran due to munitions stockpile concerns and regional economic instability, though a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains in effect. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan also declared the strikes unacceptable, emphasizing the Caspian Sea should remain a sea of peace.
