Türkiye Hosts NATO Summit to Coordinate Global Defense Spending

Türkiye hosted the 2026 NATO Leaders' Summit in Ankara to address defense spending, anti-drone investments, and security along the Eastern Flank and Black Sea.

Türkiye hosted the 2026 NATO Leaders' Summit in Ankara on July 7-8, focusing on collective defense and the implementation of 2025 defense spending commitments. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte prior to the event to finalize the agenda, which prioritized sustaining military support for Ukraine and expanding the alliance's industrial production capacity.

The summit featured high-level attendance from U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During the proceedings, Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that Allies intend to invest over 40 billion US dollars in anti-drone capabilities over the next five years. Parallel to the main summit, the NATO Security and Defence Industry Forum attracted a bipartisan delegation of U.S. lawmakers and various European leaders.

Romanian President Nicusor Dan used the gathering to advocate for increased support for the Black Sea region and strengthened air and maritime defenses on the Eastern Flank. Romania concluded the forum by signing several Memoranda of Understanding regarding the NATO Global Eye surveillance system, pilot training, and counter-drone defense. The event culminated in the adoption of a Summit Declaration addressing transatlantic burden-sharing and the operational capabilities of the alliance in response to Russian aggression.
