Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates Amid Trump Criticism

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh raised interest rates to 3.75%-4% to combat persistent inflation, defying President Donald Trump's demands for lower borrowing costs.

The Federal Open Market Committee unanimously voted on September 16, 2026, to raise the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75% to 4%. This marks the first rate increase in three years and the first under the leadership of Kevin Warsh. Warsh described the move as a "sober decision" intended to support a "timelier return" to the central bank's 2% inflation target, noting that inflation has remained elevated for over five years and reached 3.4% in August.

The decision follows a shift in judgment regarding geopolitical risks, specifically a seven-month war with Iran that has driven oil prices above $100 a barrel and gas prices to $4.44 a gallon. Other contributing factors include massive corporate investment in AI infrastructure and a U.S. national debt exceeding $40 trillion. While the labor market remains strong with 4.1% unemployment, the hike has pushed 30-year mortgage rates toward 7% and triggered a slump in major Wall Street indexes.

President Donald Trump criticized the Federal Reserve board as "political" and "hostile," demanding rates be lowered to 1% to support a "BOOMING" economy. However, Trump expressed support for Warsh personally, claiming he told the chairman to "do what you want" during a prior phone call. Other critics, including former Fed official Ramamurti, warned that the combination of rate hikes and oil shocks risks triggering stagflation. Most policymakers signal at least one more rate increase before the end of the year, with some analysts predicting a longer hiking cycle.
