Trump Cuts South Korea Drills as Canada Vows Tariffs

President Donald Trump reduced joint military exercises with South Korea and imposed tariffs on Canada, triggering North Korean missile launches and Canadian retaliatory taxes.

President Donald Trump ordered the early conclusion of joint military exercises with South Korea, ending the drills six days ahead of schedule. Trump described the exercises as an inappropriate and hostile signal to North Korea, citing his relationship with Kim Jong Un and frustration over South Korea's refusal to assist in a conflict with Iran as primary drivers for the decision.

North Korea responded to the reduction in military activity by launching a barrage of short-range ballistic missiles. Within the United States, Representative Rich McCormick criticized the move, arguing that the U.S. must maintain a stronger allegiance to South Korea to ensure effective force projection.

Simultaneously, a trade conflict escalated between the U.S. and Canada. After trade talks collapsed over auto tariffs and other demands, Trump used Section 338 to impose 50% import taxes on Canadian goods. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will apply $20 billion in counter-tariffs on U.S. products starting September 8.
