Russia Strikes Kyiv Killing Nine Amid U.S. Missile Dispute

The Federal Government of Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine on August 1, 2026, firing 35 missiles and 185 drones. The primary target was Kyiv, where at least nine people were killed and over 30 others wounded, including four children. Ballistic missiles struck residential buildings, a school, and the Lithuanian embassy, causing structural damage and broken windows. Other strikes hit 21 locations across Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Poltava.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that only one of 27 launched ballistic missiles was intercepted, attributing the failure to a critical shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles. The Ukrainian Air Force identified the arsenal as including Zircon, Onyx, and Iskander-M missiles. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the strikes targeted logistics centers and military-industrial enterprises.

This escalation follows a record-breaking month in July 2026, during which Russia launched 376 missiles and nearly 5,000 drones. In response, Zelenskyy visited the White House in late July to request more Patriot interceptors. While he stated that U.S. President Donald Trump initially agreed to license domestic production of these missiles, Trump later expressed reservations, asserting that Washington must be "very careful" regarding the decision to share such technology.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys announced that Vilnius would summon the Russian diplomatic representative to protest the embassy attack. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that the battle for the skies would define the trajectory of the war.
