Trump Offers India Energy Deals to Offset Russian Supplies

President Donald Trump is attempting to pivot India away from Russian energy and defense dependencies to undermine the revenue supporting Russia's war in Ukraine. Despite the U.S. government doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50% on August 27, 2025, the administration is offering to substitute Russian oil and gas supplies with American alternatives. U.S. Energy Secretary Alfie Moon has specifically offered these energy replacements to encourage the shift.

To incentivize this transition, the Trump administration is accelerating the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and introducing the U.S.-India COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century. This initiative seeks to expand defense co-production, increase interoperability, and more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

The strategy aims to position India as a regional economic and military counterbalance to China. Additionally, the U.S. is leveraging the UAE as a supplemental oil provider to help meet India's growing energy demands while the Government of India continues to manage its existing strategic energy and military cooperation with Russia.
