Trump Threatens Canada Tariffs as US Sanctions Iran

President Donald Trump threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian imports while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent imposed new sanctions on Iran to force negotiations.

U.S. stock futures and major indexes rose Tuesday as technology stocks rebounded ahead of Nvidia's quarterly results and a key inflation report. Despite the market gains, Donald Trump intensified a trade conflict with Canada by threatening 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel. Trump further suggested renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America and told Canadian leaders to fall in line.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by announcing retaliatory tariffs to protect domestic workers and businesses. Carney accused Washington of attempting to subordinate Canada, claiming U.S. demands sought to "destroy our major industries." The trade tensions contributed to a lower opening for the S&P/TSX Composite Index, although the Bank of Montreal and Bank of Nova Scotia saw gains after beating quarterly profit estimates.

Simultaneously, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced new sanctions against Iran. Bessent warned that countries continuing to trade with the Islamic Republic could be excluded from the dollar-based finance system. These measures pushed the Iranian rial to a record low and contributed to a nearly 3% drop in oil prices.
