US and Allies Clear Iranian Mines from Strait of Hormuz

The United States Navy and allies from Britain, France, and Germany are deploying warships, underwater drones, and littoral combat ships to clear Iranian sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz. The operation aims to reopen a waterway that handles 20 percent of the world's daily oil and liquefied natural gas supply after Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported that Iran mined large segments of international waters.

Despite these efforts, the situation escalated on Friday as Iran reported striking hostile targets in the waterway. Iranian officials stated that a traffic management deal with Oman would not fully reopen the route and proposed a bill to bar vessels from the United States, Israel, and other hostile nations. Violators could face fines of up to 20 percent of their cargo value.

These tensions coincide with Houthi attacks on military camps in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, as well as renewed Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. While President Donald Trump stated the war with Iran will end pretty soon, Iran dismissed his approach as "theater diplomacy". The instability has already impacted energy markets, with oil prices rising and U.S. imports of Saudi Arabian crude reportedly falling to zero in July, the first full-month halt since 1985.
