India and Germany Strengthen Strategic Partnership and Defense Ties
Indian and German officials are expanding defense, security, and trade cooperation following a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The governments of India and Germany are accelerating their strategic partnership through a series of high-level diplomatic engagements. Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently met at the G7 Summit in Evian, France, where they reaffirmed commitments to cooperation in defense, security, and green development. During this meeting, the leaders welcomed the signing of the Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap and a transit visa waiver for Indian nationals.
Following the G7 summit, Indian Ambassador to Germany Ajit Gupte held meetings in Berlin on July 9 and 10, 2026, with German officials Dirk Wiese and Metin Hakverdi. These discussions focused on increasing parliamentary exchanges and fostering cooperation between Indian states and German Landers. The officials also discussed leveraging the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement to boost economic ties.
Chancellor Merz has formally invited Prime Minister Modi to attend the 8th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations in Germany later this year. This upcoming event is intended to coincide with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
