China Appoints Trade Envoy as Delegation Visits United States

The State Council of China appointed veteran diplomat Li Chenggang as the country's international trade representative, granting him minister's rank and a national mandate to strengthen economic relations with key partners. The appointment comes as China prepares for an expected meeting between President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Simultaneously, Vice-Premier He Lifeng is leading a Chinese delegation to the United States from September 19 to September 23 for consultations on mutual economic and trade concerns. These talks follow a consensus reached by the heads of state of both nations.

U.S. business leaders and industry groups expressed optimism about the consultations. Jim Sutter of the US Soybean Export Council emphasized the structural importance of agricultural trade, while Liliana Lucioni of Coach China noted the company's expansion plans within the Chinese market. Analysts suggest that stable bilateral relations are necessary for China to boost domestic demand and for the United States to address its debt sustainability.
