Donald Trump Praises Nigeria's Counterterrorism Efforts in Official Letter

President Donald Trump sent a letter dated July 6, 2026, to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu praising his "decisive leadership" in addressing national security challenges. Trump specifically commended Tinubu's resolve to combat terrorism and violence targeting Christian communities, signaling a diplomatic warming after the U.S. had threatened to cut aid and consider military action in late 2025 over the treatment of Christians in Nigeria.

To bolster these efforts, the two nations implemented the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap. This collaboration includes a joint security working group established in November 2025 and the deployment of United States Special Operations Forces to provide training, tools, and intelligence to the Armed Forces of Nigeria. These combined efforts led to a coordinated attack on ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad area on May 16, 2026, which resulted in the death of top leader Abubakar Al-Minoki.

The diplomatic outreach coincided with a recent visit to Abuja by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Frank Garcia to pledge further cooperation. However, the security environment remains volatile; on July 23, gunmen killed between 21 and 23 people across five villages in Zamfara state, Nigeria.
