Lula to Warn Trump Against Interfering in Brazil Elections

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced he intends to warn U.S. President Donald Trump against interfering in Brazil's upcoming October elections. Speaking at a campaign stop in the Ceilandia neighborhood of Brasilia, Lula stated he would tell Trump, "don't meddle in the elections in Brazil," during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The friction stems from three rounds of U.S. tariffs imposed on Brazilian products between 2025 and July 2026. Lula characterizes these tariffs as economic pressure designed to influence the election. The U.S. measures were initially a retaliation for the trial and conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally and father of current right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.

While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil confirmed that no formal bilateral meeting is currently scheduled, officials expect the two leaders to encounter one another during the assembly.
