Allied Nations Reconsider F-35 Purchases Amid Trump Tariffs

Several allied nations are reconsidering the purchase of U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets after the administration of Donald Trump imposed aggressive trade tariffs. The shift in procurement strategy follows a 39 percent tariff on Swiss exports, the highest rate applied to any developed country, and notifications to Swiss officials that the aircraft's cost would exceed previous estimates.

In Switzerland, political opposition to a multibillion-franc order for 36 jets has surged. While the Swiss government has not yet canceled the order, members of the Swiss Parliament are actively working to end the deal. This internal pressure coincides with previous efforts by French President Emmanuel Macron to persuade Switzerland to purchase the Dassault Rafale instead.

Spain has already taken more definitive action. The government confirmed on August 6 that it is ending efforts to purchase the F-35. Spain is redirecting approximately 6.25 billion euros previously allocated for air force modernization toward the Eurofighter Typhoon or the Future Combat Air System program.
