Iran Targets US Midterms With Economic Information Campaign

Iran is launching an information campaign targeting the American public to highlight economic costs of the conflict ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.

Iranian officials and military bodies are conducting an information campaign targeting the American public to highlight the economic costs of the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Through state-affiliated outlets and social media, Iran is emphasizing rising gas prices, inflation, and military spending to increase the political cost of the conflict for Donald Trump ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has specifically targeted U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent with messages regarding the cost of living. Simultaneously, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a letter to Americans claiming the U.S. economy is nearing implosion due to plummeting demand for American bonds.

Domestically, the Democratic Party is leveraging the conflict in campaign advertisements, spending approximately $42 million on ads that link the war to spikes in grocery and fertilizer prices. These ads focus on Republican votes for war powers resolutions, while Republicans have largely ignored the conflict in their own advertising, focusing instead on taxes, crime, and immigration.

President Trump has dismissed the idea that the midterm elections will influence his policy toward Iran. He maintains that his primary goal remains preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, regardless of the political climate surrounding the November elections.
