Marco Rubio Sets Goal for Cuba Political Transition by 2029
Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Cuba will be on an irreversible path toward political change before the Trump administration ends in January 2029.
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Cuba will be on an irreversible path toward a different political future before the end of the Trump administration in January 2029. Speaking on the Katie Miller Pod podcast, Rubio cautioned that transformation will not happen overnight because the existing regime is deeply rooted. He cited Poland and Eastern Europe as examples where political transitions required three to five years.
Rubio framed a secure, stable, and U.S.-aligned Cuba as a matter of American national interest, applying the same objective to Venezuela. To achieve this, the Trump administration has implemented over two dozen actions against the Cuban government since January 2026. These measures include sanctions on more than 40 entities and 38 individuals linked to organizations such as GAESA and CUPET.
The administration intends for these sanctions to close every escape mechanism for the Cuban regime as part of a broader strategy to force political change.
