Michelle Steel Arrives in Seoul as U.S. Ambassador

Michelle Steel arrived at Incheon International Airport on Thursday, July 30, 2026, to begin her tenure as the United States Ambassador to South Korea. Steel is the first U.S. envoy to fill the post since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025 and the second Korean American to hold the position. The post had been vacant for 18 months.

Upon her arrival, Steel pledged to advance a results-oriented alliance and implement the vision established during the October summit between President Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Gyeongju. Her primary objectives include managing agreements on trade, civilian nuclear cooperation, shipbuilding, and South Korea's pursuit of nuclear-powered submarines, as well as a planned $350 billion South Korean investment package in the U.S.

Steel's arrival was met with protests from civic activists who criticized her conservative political background, her views on North Korean engagement, and her previous defense of the e-commerce company Coupang amid regulatory disputes in South Korea. While the South Korean foreign ministry welcomed her appointment, formal diplomatic engagements will begin next week after Steel submits her credentials to President Lee and Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, both of whom are returning from South America.
