China Pledges to Buy 20 Million Tons of US Coal
China agreed to purchase 20 million metric tons of US coal and lower tariffs on $30 billion of goods following a state visit.
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping reached a trade agreement during a state visit, in which China pledged to purchase 20 million metric tons of United States coal over the next two years. The deal schedules 10 million metric tons for delivery in 2027 and another 10 million in 2028.
Through the US-China Board of Trade, the two nations also agreed to pursue preferential tariffs on $30 billion of non-sensitive goods. These concessions aim to ease trade tensions between the two global powers.
Despite these agreements, the visit did not resolve the ongoing crisis regarding China's restrictions on critical minerals and rare earths. The White House stated that trade negotiators will continue to address these bottlenecks, as no immediate resolution was reached on the mineral shortages.
