Donald Trump Endorses Benjamin Netanyahu Ahead of Israeli Election
President Donald Trump endorsed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for re-election on October 18, citing the need for a strong partner to combat Iran.
President Donald Trump endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for re-election on October 18, nine days before Israel's national election on October 27. In social media posts, Trump described Netanyahu as a "great warrior prime minister" and a "Partner for Peace in combatting the Islamic Republic of Iran," warning that any other leader would be the "wrong Leader."
The endorsement followed a period of uncertainty and conflicting signals. On October 17, Israeli opposition leaders lobbied U.S. diplomats to prevent the endorsement, while Netanyahu's Likud party pressed for one. Early reports on October 18 suggested Trump had declined to support Netanyahu due to frustrations over military actions in Lebanon and Gaza, as well as Netanyahu's poor polling performance.
Despite this reported cooling of their alliance, Trump ultimately provided the public backing, stating that without Netanyahu, the United States might have to handle the conflict with Iran alone. Netanyahu thanked Trump for the support, asserting that together they would "complete the mission!"
Analysts suggest the endorsement may have limited impact on the tight race due to deep polarization within Israel and declining local support for Trump following an unpopular Iran ceasefire. However, the two leaders continue to discuss potential renewed strikes on Iran.
