Israel Threatens Gaza Evacuations Over Children's Kite Flying

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened to intensify military operations and force evacuations in the Gaza Strip after kites, balloons, and drones drifted into Israeli territory. Netanyahu warned that those responsible for the launches would be targets of assassination, while Katz stated that Israel would treat kites as drones regardless of whether they carry explosives. The Israeli Foreign Ministry labeled the kites weapons of terror, citing previous incendiary attacks.

Despite these threats, the Israeli army reported that four recovered kites contained no suspicious materials and posed no danger to the public. In response to the security warnings, Gaza's popular committees urged parents to stop their children from flying kites to protect them from becoming pretexts for renewed attacks.

Hamas officials denied responsibility, characterizing the kites as toys and dismissing the Israeli warnings as fake pretexts to continue the war. The United Nations and the UN Human Rights Office condemned the threat of forced evacuations as unacceptable under international law. Additionally, the U.S.-led Board of Peace, which oversees the October 2025 ceasefire, stated that all militant activity, including kite-flying, must stop, while simultaneously demanding that Israel comply with the ceasefire and cease strikes that are not responses to genuine and imminent threats.
