U.S. Offers Iran Negotiations Amid Threats of Economic Destruction

United States Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz announced Sunday that the U.S. government is open to negotiations with Iran to end a conflict that began on February 28. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Waltz asserted that the Iranian regime is at its weakest point since 1979 due to economic pressure and currency collapse. He dismissed reports that Tehran required reparations and an end to sanctions as conditions for talks, stating that Washington believes time is on its side.

President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to lead an Iranian delegation to the UN General Assembly from September 22 to 28. While the visit has improved market sentiment, President Donald Trump warned that Iran must either reach a deal or face the destruction of its economy and leadership. In response, the Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters of Iran warned of painful retaliation against U.S. interests in the Middle East following intelligence of a potential large-scale U.S. strike.

Regional tensions remain high as Saudi authorities recently intercepted Houthi missile and drone attacks on Riyadh. Iran has stated it will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the U.S. lifts naval blockades, eases sanctions, and unfreezes assets. Separately, Waltz indicated that discussions on President Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza could progress after Israel's parliamentary elections on October 27.
