Trump Privately Backs JD Vance for 2028 Presidency

President Donald Trump privately signaled to donors in an Oval Office meeting that he favors Vice President JD Vance as his successor for the 2028 presidential election, stating, "At the end of the day, we need to elect JD." While some advisers suggest Trump has resolved that Vance is the GOP heir, other staff members maintain the president has not made a final decision. Trump continues to evaluate Vance against Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reportedly questioning staff about both men during a flight on Marine One last month.

This private preference contrasts with recent polling and public postures. Rubio recently won a conservative straw poll at a Colorado summit, receiving 57% of the vote compared to Vance's 21%. Despite the competition, Rubio has stated he would be the first person to support Vance if the vice president chooses to run.

JD Vance has not confirmed a 2028 bid, stating he will decide after the November midterms and the recent birth of his fourth child on July 19. Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters praised Vance as a fundraising powerhouse for the party. The outcome of the 2026 midterms is expected to influence the succession contest and determine the viability of challengers against Trump's preferred candidate.
