Donald Trump Pauses Iran Airstrikes as Regional Conflict Expands

President Donald Trump paused nightly airstrikes against Iran on July 26, ending a sequence of 13 waves of attacks that began on July 11. Trump declined a Pentagon proposal for a 14th night of strikes, citing a preference for negotiations despite warning Iran that future strikes would occur at a much higher level if no deal is reached. The pause follows concerns from Vice President JD Vance and General Dan Caine regarding economic shocks and regional escalation, as well as dwindling stockpiles of Patriot interceptors.

The conflict has expanded across multiple fronts. Houthi rebels launched missile and drone attacks against Saudi Aramco oil facilities in Jizan and Yanbu, following the collapse of a 2022 truce and recent Saudi strikes on Hodeidah. In Yanbu, the Greek military intercepted two ballistic missiles. Simultaneously, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has maintained a blockade of ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Further complicating the geopolitical landscape, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed responsibility for long-range strikes against Iranian warships and cargo vessels in the Caspian Sea. Zelenskyy alleged that Russia provided the satellite intelligence used to target these vessels. In response to the regional volatility, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has offered to broker talks between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, asserting that a military solution is not viable.
