Ukraine Seeks Elon Musk Approval for Starlink Drone Strikes
Ukraine has requested Elon Musk's permission to use Starlink-equipped drones for precision strikes against Russian ballistic missile launchers up to 200 kilometers inside Russian territory.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has formally requested approval from Elon Musk to equip long-range drones with Starlink terminals. This initiative aims to conduct precision strikes against Russian ballistic missile launchers, command systems, and logistics infrastructure up to 200 kilometers inside Russian territory.
Ukraine is pursuing this "shooting-the-archer" strategy to offset a critical shortage of American-made Patriot air-defense interceptors. This shortage has been worsened by the deployment of those missiles to the Middle East during the U.S. war with Iran. Ukrainian officials seek to destroy launch sites before the onset of winter to mitigate intensifying missile and drone strikes.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously asked U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene with Musk during a July meeting at the White House. Trump remained non-committal and reportedly did not back the proposal. Musk has consistently refused to authorize Starlink for offensive operations inside Russia, citing concerns over potential nuclear escalation.
The effort is further complicated by the recent dismissal of Mykhailo Fedorov, the former minister who served as the primary direct line of communication between the Ukrainian government and Musk.
