China Defends Industrial Model Ahead of U.S. and EU Trade Talks

The Government of China is aggressively defending an economic model that prioritizes advanced industries over consumer spending. This stance comes as Beijing prepares for scheduled trade negotiations with the United States and the European Union. The European Union has established an October deadline for China to resolve trade disputes linked to a trade surplus exceeding one trillion dollars.

To counter accusations of mercantilism and industrial overcapacity, the Chinese commerce ministry released a position paper rejecting such claims as being based on "logical flaws" and "ulterior motives." Premier Li Qiang described the potential for Chinese firms to dominate advanced manufacturing as "China opportunity 2.0" rather than a "China shock 2.0."

While China has slowed some local government investment and admitted a need for long-term consumption growth, top Communist Party leaders remain committed to policy continuity and targeted industrial support. President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to hold further face-to-face meetings later this year to discuss these tensions.
