Jack Smith to Testify Before Senate Judiciary Committee

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith is scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. This appearance follows his 2022 appointment to investigate Donald Trump for conspiring to overturn the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents.

Republican lawmakers have accused Smith of abusing his prosecutorial power to benefit the Biden administration and allege he provided misleading testimony in previous hearings. In response, Smith intends to tell senators that he would still prosecute a former president based on the same facts regardless of party affiliation.

The legal conflict intensified following the 2024 re-election of Donald Trump, which led to Smith's resignation. Trump has since asserted that he has shifted from being "hunted" to becoming "the hunter." Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated in July that the Justice Department would investigate whether Smith lied to Congress.
