Andy Burnham to Meet Donald Trump at UN General Assembly

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is scheduled to hold his first in-person meeting with US President Donald Trump next week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The meeting follows two phone conversations since Burnham took office in July, during which he invited Trump to Manchester for next year's G20 summit. While Trump has described Burnham as "a very nice guy," the Prime Minister previously stated in 2021 that politicians engaging with Trump should be "ashamed" and once suggested banning him from Manchester.

Burnham has defended his history of speaking his mind but emphasized his commitment to finding common ground in the British public's interest. Labour chairwoman and equalities minister Bridget Phillipson dismissed the past remarks as "politics," asserting they are "no bar to having a strong relationship" essential for defense and intelligence sharing. Phillipson also noted that the UK government made the correct decision not to involve itself in Trump's military campaign against Iran, though she admitted that the resulting disruption to global oil supplies has created inflationary pressures complicating the upcoming budget.

Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey has urged the Prime Minister to take a firmer stance, stating that the UK needs to see "some teeth" in the relationship with the White House. Burnham has maintained that he will continue to work with others to find common ground while remaining honest about his views.
