U.S. and Iran Establish Military Hotline Amid Fragile Peace Deal

The United States and Iran created a military deconfliction channel in Qatar to prevent escalation following a preliminary peace accord and ongoing nuclear disputes.

The United States and Iran established a direct military communication channel in Doha, Qatar, to prevent accidental escalation and manage the Strait of Hormuz. This arrangement, announced by Vice President JD Vance, stations representatives from U.S. Central Command and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Doha. The move follows a June 17 memorandum of understanding and technical talks at the Lake Lucerne Summit in Switzerland, aiming to end regional hostilities and facilitate the removal of approximately 80 naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz.

Diplomatic efforts remain fragile as negotiators prepare for expert-level talks in Switzerland on June 28 and 29. While President Masoud Pezeshkian offered written guarantees that Iran will not build an atomic bomb, he maintains that uranium enrichment is a non-negotiable right. President Donald Trump has threatened to take over the Strait of Hormuz if no nuclear deal is reached. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has sought support from the Gulf Cooperation Council in Bahrain, rejecting Iranian attempts to impose tolls on international waterways.

Regional tensions persist over the conflict in Lebanon. Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that Israeli troops will remain in southern Lebanon to maintain a security zone, contradicting a U.S.-supported withdrawal proposal. This disagreement highlights a rift in the U.S. administration, as JD Vance criticized Israeli strikes in Beirut, while Marco Rubio defended the military campaign as a justified response to Hezbollah.
