Iran Threatens UK Bases as US Strikes Intensify

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared the RAF Fairford airbase in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, a legitimate target after the United States launched B-1 bomber raids from the facility. This escalation followed a 12-to-13-night U.S. bombing campaign targeting Iranian maritime capabilities, missile storage, and command centers in southern provinces, including sites near Bushehr. U.S. Central Command stated the operations aim to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

In retaliation, Iranian forces struck multiple U.S. bases in Kuwait, including Ali Al Salem and Camp Arifjan, while Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked two Saudi-flagged tankers in the Red Sea. The IRGC also intercepted three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, one of which exploded. President Donald Trump threatened to destroy a bridge or power plant for every ship Iran targets and is reportedly considering a massive attack in response to the deaths of U.S. service personnel in the Gulf.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has maintained a policy of allowing the U.S. to conduct defensive operations from British bases, including RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia. The Government of the United Kingdom responded to Iranian threats by stating its armed forces are ready 24/7 to defend the country using a layered air and missile defense approach. Simultaneously, the UK Ministry of Defence awarded BAE Systems a £708 million contract for next-generation combat aircraft to counter evolving global threats.
