AI and Data Centers Become Key 2026 Midterm Issues

Artificial intelligence and the expansion of data centers have become central, bipartisan issues in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. An analysis of 1,200 candidate websites shows AI-related policies appear in nearly 40 percent of races, surpassing traditional campaign topics like manufacturing and racism.

Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, recently reversed his previous support for data centers by introducing new regulations following pressure from political opponents. This shift drew criticism from former President Donald Trump, who argued that Abbott made a "mistake" by ignoring the economic benefits of the facilities. Meanwhile, U.S. Representative Gregorio Casar warned that mass job losses caused by AI could trigger a "political earthquake."

Party platforms differ in their approach to the technology. Republicans generally frame AI as a matter of national security and competition with China, a view echoed by U.S. Representative Gabe Evans, who proposed legislation to lower electricity costs for U.S. AI companies. Democrats feature the technology more frequently on their platforms, with progressive figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Frank Pallone advocating for a national ban on data centers to address environmental and economic anxieties.
