Keir Starmer Fights Leadership Crisis After Local Election Collapse
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is resisting calls to resign after Labour suffered historic local election defeats, triggering a wave of ministerial resignations and a formal leadership challenge.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is battling for political survival after the Labour Party suffered a historic collapse in the May 7, 2026, local and regional elections. Labour lost over 1,400 council seats in England and was ousted from power in the Welsh Senedd for the first time in over a century, finishing third behind Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. The right-wing populist Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, capitalized on this shift, gaining over 1,400 seats and seizing control of several councils, including Havering and Essex County Council.
The electoral disaster triggered an immediate internal revolt. More than 90 Labour MPs and 11 affiliated trade unions demanded Starmer's resignation. A wave of ministerial departures followed, including Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips and Housing Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh. The crisis peaked on May 14 when Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned, citing a "vacuum" of vision and explicitly calling for a broad leadership contest.
Starmer has remained defiant, refusing to step down by arguing that doing so would "plunge the country into chaos." To stabilize his position, he appointed former Prime Minister Gordon Brown as a special envoy on global finance and delivered a "reset" speech on May 11. In this address, he pledged a bolder direction, including the nationalization of British Steel and closer ties with the European Union through a proposed youth mobility scheme.
Potential successors have begun positioning themselves. Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner emerged as a contender after being cleared of tax wrongdoing by HMRC. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is also viewed as a frontrunner; MP Josh Simons resigned his Makerfield seat to facilitate Burnham's return to Parliament via a by-election, a move approved by the National Executive Committee.
