Trump Administration Implements New 10 Percent and 12.5 Percent Tariffs

The administration of Donald Trump announced that new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% covering most imports into the United States will take effect this Friday, July 24, 2026. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative issued the update following the expiration of a temporary global duty and a February ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that deemed many previous tariffs illegal.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt initially announced the timing of the policy update on Thursday. The administration maintains that the trade agenda will revitalize U.S. industrial heartlands and boost jobs. During a Senate exchange on Wednesday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer defended the policy against critics who warned of rising national prices, denying that tariffs had increased costs for American families.

Greer supported his position by citing economic data, stating that core inflation fell to 2.6% year on year, which he noted was a significant improvement over January 2025.
