Andy Burnham Refuses to Rule Out Rejoining European Union

Prime Minister Andy Burnham declined to rule out the possibility of including a reversal of Brexit in the Labour Party's next election manifesto. While traveling to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, Burnham stated that his immediate priority is rebuilding bridges with European allies and securing practical agreements to boost the British economy, though he noted that discussions regarding EU membership are for another day.

During a meeting on Tuesday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Burnham raised concerns over the Industrial Accelerator Act, known as the Made in Europe scheme. He warned that the policy, which prioritizes EU firms for public contracts and subsidies to curb Chinese influence, could cause collateral damage to British industry and supply chains, particularly in the steel, defense, and car manufacturing sectors. Burnham emphasized that the UK and EU are not enemies and face similar challenges.

The leaders also discussed common security threats, including Russian aggression in Ukraine, hybrid warfare, and AI safety, ahead of the UK's 2027 G20 presidency. This meeting serves as a precursor to a rescheduled UK-EU summit planned for later this year. While Burnham intends to maintain the red lines established by Keir Starmer for the current term, he faces pressure from pro-EU Labour MPs to shift policy to stimulate economic growth.
