Qatar Mediates Iran-US War Talks and Pilot Release
The Government of Qatar is facilitating indirect peace talks between the US and Iran while negotiating the release of three captured Iranian pilots.
The Government of Qatar is currently mediating two distinct diplomatic tracks between Iran and the United States amid a seven-month Middle East war. Qatari officials confirmed that indirect talks to end the conflict continue through the exchange of messages, though a deadlock persists over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This stalemate follows a June memorandum of understanding and an April ceasefire.
Recent rhetoric suggests a hardening of positions. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian dismissed negotiations with the U.S. as meaningless, while U.S. President Donald Trump stated the war would end one way or another. Despite these tensions, Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni in Doha on Tuesday to discuss regional stability.
Parallel to the war negotiations, Iran is seeking the release of three pilots—Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Emran Behrouzian—captured during a March 2 mission against the Al-Udeid Air Base. Momeni announced that a technical delegation will travel to Qatar to continue negotiations for their return. During his visit, Momeni also discussed increasing bilateral trade with Qatar and argued that regional security must be endogenous.
