Trump Imposes Naval Blockade on Iran After Failed Peace Talks

Following the collapse of high-stakes ceasefire negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, Donald Trump ordered a comprehensive naval blockade of all Iranian ports and coastal areas effective April 13, 2026. The diplomatic failure occurred after 21 hours of talks led by Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who remained deadlocked over Iran's nuclear enrichment program and the control of the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. demanded a 20-year moratorium on uranium enrichment, while Iran proposed a five-year pause and sought the release of frozen assets.

Enforced by U.S. Central Command with over 10,000 personnel and a fleet including the USS Abraham Lincoln, the blockade targets all vessels entering or departing Iranian ports. The U.S. military has intercepted numerous ships, including the sanctioned tankers Majestic X and Tousca, while Iran has responded by seizing commercial vessels and threatening to block all trade in the Persian Gulf, Sea of Oman, and Red Sea. The escalation has triggered a severe global energy crisis, pushing crude oil prices above $100 per barrel and disrupting 20% of global oil and LNG supplies. While NATO allies like the United Kingdom and France declined to join the blockade, they have proposed a separate multinational defensive mission to restore freedom of navigation. Despite the military standoff, both nations have indicated a willingness to resume diplomacy, with mediators from Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt working to arrange a second round of talks.
