Democrats Win U.S. Congress and Pennsylvania State Trifecta
Democrats regained control of the U.S. House and Senate while securing a state-level trifecta in Pennsylvania during the 2026 midterm elections.
The Democratic Party achieved a sweeping victory in the 2026 midterm elections, regaining control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. This shift, described as a blue tsunami, included flipping at least seven Senate seats in states such as South Carolina, Kansas, Texas, Iowa, Ohio, and North Carolina. In the House, Democrats ousted several Republican incumbents, including Brian Fitzpatrick, Scott Perry, Ryan Mackenzie, and Rob Bresnahan Jr. in Pennsylvania, and Jeff Van Drew in New Jersey.
In Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro won a landslide reelection and helped secure a Democratic trifecta, gaining control of the governorship, state House, and state Senate for the first time since the early 1990s. Shapiro intends to use this unilateral power to raise the minimum wage, codify reproductive rights, and increase mass transit funding.
An AP Voter Poll of over 100,000 voters indicated that Democrats regained support among voters under 30, Hispanic voters, and Black voters, particularly Black men. Moderate and lower-income voters also shifted away from Republicans, citing inflation and a lack of congressional checks on the presidency.
President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the results, attributing losses to voter dissatisfaction over gasoline prices. Following the defeat, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he will not seek reelection as the House Republican leader.
