India and European Union Target 2026 FTA Signing

India and the European Union expect to sign a historic free trade agreement by the end of 2026, with implementation projected for 2027.

The European Union and India are working to finalize a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2026, with implementation expected in 2027 following ratification by both parties. First jointly announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on January 27, 2026, the deal is described as the largest and most far-reaching agreement Europe has ever concluded.

Strategic discussions in Munich and New Delhi highlight a broader agenda beyond trade. The partnership aims for deeper integration in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, life sciences, space, and defense. Finland is specifically pursuing ties in education and innovation, including a collaboration between Nokia and ICEYE to develop sovereign dual-use satellite communication systems.

Diplomatic efforts are also focusing on global governance. While India seeks a more active role in a multipolar order, Wolfgang Ischinger, President of the Munich Security Conference Foundation Council, has advocated for India to receive permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council, calling the lack of such reform a shame.
