Democrats Seize Control of Congress in Rebuke of Trump

Democrats won majorities in the U.S. House and Senate in the 2026 midterms, ending unified Republican control and signaling voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump.

The Democratic Party seized control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, ending two years of unified Republican control. The shift followed a wave of voter dissatisfaction centered on high inflation, the cost of living, and the administration's war against Iran. Exit polls indicated that approximately 40% of voters cast their ballots specifically to oppose President Donald Trump, with many citing his tariffs and economic policies as primary burdens.

Democrats achieved historic upsets in traditionally Republican strongholds. In Texas, James Talarico won a U.S. Senate seat, marking the first statewide Democratic victory in the state in over 30 years, despite hundreds of millions of dollars in spending by Elon Musk to support Republican Ken Paxton. Other key Senate flips occurred in South Carolina, Kansas, North Carolina, and Ohio. The elections also produced several leadership firsts, including Keisha Lance Bottoms becoming the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history in Georgia, and Chris Pappas becoming the first openly gay man elected to the U.S. Senate in New Hampshire.

President Donald Trump initially reacted with agitation on social media, claiming the GOP would have won in a landslide had he been on the ballot. He later stated he would accept the results but vowed to act as "Mr Veto" to block Democratic legislation. In response to their new majorities, Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries and Robert Garcia, announced plans to launch investigations into the Trump family's business dealings and the administration's energy and healthcare policies.
