Putin and Mohammed bin Salman Discuss Middle East Maritime Security

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman held a series of phone conversations on September 22 to address escalating tensions in the Middle East. The leaders emphasized that political and diplomatic efforts are the only viable path to stabilize the region and defuse tensions while accommodating the interests of all parties.

A primary focus of the discussions was the deteriorating military and geopolitical situation in Yemen. Both leaders called for a swift cessation of hostilities and the establishment of a constructive intra-Yemeni dialogue under United Nations auspices. This comes as Houthi militants express openness to a comprehensive ceasefire provided the Saudi siege of Houthi-controlled areas ends.

The leaders also stressed the necessity of ensuring safe and unimpeded maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb. These critical waterways have been disrupted by Iran and Iran-allied Houthi militants, forcing Saudi Arabia to route oil exports through Egypt's Suez Canal. An Iranian official stated the Strait of Hormuz could reopen within seven days if the United States eases military pressure and lifts its blockade on Iranian ports.

Parallel to these diplomatic efforts, Mohammed bin Salman has requested that the United States rejoin the fight against the Houthis, though the U.S. has rebuffed these pleas. Reports indicate that President Donald Trump canceled planned U.S. strikes against the Houthis on Sunday at the last minute.
