James Talarico Moderates Platform and Targets Black Voters in Texas

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico is moderating his policy positions and intensifying outreach to Black voters in his campaign against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. Talarico has shifted from staunch opposition to restrictions on transgender athletes to opposing them if they endanger safety or fairness. He has also moved from calling fossil fuels destructive to advocating for an all-of-the-above energy strategy to protect the oil and gas industry.
Republicans, including former President Donald Trump and the Lone Star Liberty PAC, have dismissed these shifts as temporary modulation to win a statewide race. Talarico has responded by framing these attacks as the work of billionaire donors, centering his campaign on a populist economic divide between the top and bottom of society.
To secure critical voting blocs, Talarico is investing $25 million in outreach to Black communities, hiring veteran Black political operatives and visiting churches and businesses. These efforts follow a July town hall in Houston where voters expressed apprehension over the campaign's engagement. Talarico is also working to resolve tensions following his primary victory over U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett, specifically condemning racially charged attacks against her.
